Australia is phasing out bilateral aid to India. This corresponds with the Indian Government’s preference to receive aid from fewer and larger donors, as well as encourage smaller donors such as Australia to channel their aid through multilateral and non-government organisations. There will be zero allocation of bilateral aid from 2013–14, but Australia will continue to provide targeted assistance through multilateral organisations and regional or global programs where we can make a difference to poor people, in line with Effective Aid. Cooperation with India through the South and West Asia Regional program aims to enhance technical cooperation to improve water, food and energy security.
